HHSG joins the 2nd Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill

Headquarters Philippine Army(HPA), Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City – Just like other countries which was struck by major earthquake, the Philippines is also due for a powerful earthquake called “The Big One" which experts say may happen in our lifetime once the West Valley Fault moves.

The West Valley Fault is a dominant fault system in Luzon. It extends from Dingalan, Aurora in the north and runs through the cities of Quezon, Marikina, Pasig, Makati, Parañaque, Taguig, and the provinces of Laguna and Cavite.  The fault possesses a threat of a large scale earthquake with a magnitude of 7 or higher within the Metro Manila area. The Headquarters Philippine Army (HPA) Complex, which is situated in the city of Taguig is dangerously sitting on top of the West Valley Fault Line.

2nd Quarter Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED)

The NDRRMC held the 2nd Quarter Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) at about 1400h yesterday nationwide with the theme “Bida Ang Handa”. The 2nd quarter NSED has the objective to test the community preparedness efforts, synergize and synchronize efforts towards supporting the effective implementation of both the National and Regional Disaster Response Plan.

The Headquarters and Headquarters Support Group, Philippine Army (HHSG, PA) together with other units and offices within HPA joined and participated in the conduct of the 2nd Quarter simultaneous Earthquake Drill. The personnel inside HPA performed the duck, cover and hold right after hearing a loud 60-second siren signalling a magnitude 7.2 earthquake generated from the West Valley Fault affecting the Greater Metro Manila Area (GMMA). The troops performed various scenarios portraying the possible impacts of the earthquake inside HPA complex like the loss of power and communications systems, inaccessible roads, breakdown of law and order and major damages on infrastructures. In response to the above scenarios “Task Force Kalasag” composed of personnel from HHSG, PA will perform the following:

    • Conduct of Disaster Response Operations (DRO)
    • Law enforcement and security operation
    • Evacuation
    • Damage assessment
    • Camp coordination and management
    • Search and rescue
    • Retrieval operation
    • Fire suppression
    • Emergency medical response
    • Accounting of personnel.

These response were done in order to protect and alleviate the suffering of the people from the effects of the disasters. The activity was terminated at about 1500h on the same day. The drill marks a positive outcome and provided opportunity to our soldier to practice how to protect themselves and what to do when a disaster like this comes.
