Phil Army Cycling Team Wins in the Tour de Basilan


    Isabela Basilan - The Special Services Center, HHSG, PA fielded nine (9) riders from the Phil Army Cycling Team during the historical race “1st Tour de Basilan” dubbed as "The 120K Bike for HOPE” (Honest, Orderly and Peaceful Election) on 12 May 2018. The race covered 120 kilometers along the concreted Basilan Circumferential Road (BCR) with more than 200 mountain bike (MTB) enthusiasts coming from the different cities and towns of Butuan, Davao, GenSan and Visayas regions. The tour was organized and sponsored by the Office of the Governor of ARMM under Governor Mujib Hataman and the province of Basilan under Governor Jim Hataman in partnership with AFP’s Joint Task Force Basilan under BGEN JUVYMAX UY. The purpose of the race was to seek charity support for the Program Against Violent Extremism (PAVE) that helps the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) surrenderees for their rehabilitation and community reintegration.    

    The Army bikers dominated the race as Pfc Cris Joven finished first among the participants and declared winner of the 25-34 years old category, while Sgts Alvin Venosa, Reynaldo Navarro and Alfie Catalan finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the 35-43 years old category. Others who made the podium were Cpl Lord Anthony Del Rosario (6th) and Pfc Kenneth Lacuesta (8th) in the 25-34 Category while Sgt Merculio Ramos placed 10th in the 35-43 Category.

    The team was led by COL ANTONIO JOHN DIVINAGRACIA the Director of Special Services Center, HHSG, PA. COL DIVINAGRACIA formerly commanded combat units conducting Internal Security Operations (ISO) and witnessed the peace and order situation in Basilan for the last three (3) decades. His purpose in participating the event is to let the riders from Luzon noticed and experienced the serenity and peacefulness of the province. The sense of peace and security they now experienced was the product and result of the hard work and sacrifices of our troops assigned in the island specifically the  104th "Sultan" Brigade formerly under GENERAL JOSELITO GALVEZ, CSAFP, LTGEN ROLANDO JOSELITO D BAUTISTA, CGPA, BGEN DONATO and the current Commander of 104th Bde BGEN JUVYMAX R UY.

    COL DIVINAGRACIA mentioned that the athletes can be an instrument to convey to the Filipino people that indeed peace has find its place not only physically but in the hearts of the Basilenos.
