HHSG supports the National Greening Program of the Government

Tree-planting is the process of transplanting tree seedlings, generally for forestry, land reclamation, or landscaping purpose. It differs from the transplantation of larger trees in arboriculture, and from the lower cost but slower and less reliable distribution of tree seeds. Trees play an important role in sustaining a healthy environment. Every tree planted is part of a large scale effort around the world to make a significant impact on the environment.

For decades the Philippine environment has been under assault from a fast-growing population and practices that have degraded the country’s air, land, and water. Our forests have been heavily affected with the unrelenting cuttings of trees, illegal loggings and deforestations. This erroneous approach to our environment has resulted to disasters that produce large scale damage to the habitat and humanity.

The National Greening Program of the government

Fortunately, there has been growing recognition of the problems, such bad habits have created an increasing desire to introduce sound environmental practice; attempts have been made to restore our environment by both government and individuals. As per Executive Order No 26 from the Office of the President, it is the policy of the state to pursue sustainable development for poverty reduction, food security, biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation and adaption. The National Greening Program (NGP) shall plant some 1.5 billion trees covering about 1.5 million hectares to the lands of the public domain like forestlands, mangroves and protected areas, urban areas, other suitable lands and civil and military reservations.

The implementing rules and regulations of executive order No. 26 declared the NGP as a government priority mandating the Department of National Defense (DND) and Armed forces of the Philippines (AFP) to be one of the participants. The DND and AFP shall be responsible for the Nursery establishment, site preparation, transportation, security and planting. Its objectives are the following:

    • Implement sustainable forest management through resource conservation, protection, and productivity enhancement thereby mitigating climate change
    • Promote public awareness by instilling social and environmental consciousness on the value of forest
    • Be part of the overall efforts of the National Government to enhance the formation of the positive values among the youth and other stakeholders in the sustainable management of NGP.

    HHSG Tree Planting Activity

Headquarters and Headquarters Support Group (HHSG) support the mandate of the National Greening Program of the President. The unit aims for the restoration of the trees and rainforests inside HPA complex in order to help recover and conserve biodiversity, and optimize the benefits from reforestation such as cleaner air and better ecosystem. The office of the AC of S for CMO, G7 HHSG, PA and the students of RRT Cl 02-2018 conducted tree planting activity earlier this morning at about 0600h, 3 July 2018. A total of 50 personnel’s from various units under HHSG participated in the tree planting, the soldiers planted Bignay and Ilang-Ilang seedlings at the bike trail area near the SEBn lagoon, FBMM. These trees will help the restoration efforts towards climate change mitigation, risk reduction of natural hazards, and enhanced options for sustainable livelihood.  HHSG believes that people are its greatest resources; the unit aims to promote the spirit of volunteerism by encouraging its personnel to actively participate in the greening program of the unit.
